  • OPAL

At our school, we believe play is an essential part of childhood and a powerful way for children to learn, develop and thrive. That is why we are proud to be developing our outdoor provision through OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning).

OPAL is an award-winning programme that supports schools in improving the quality of play opportunities available to children during break and lunchtimes. It is based on the understanding that play is not simply a break from learning — it is an important part of children’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive development.

Through OPAL, we aim to create a rich, inclusive and engaging outdoor environment where every child can find something they enjoy. Children are encouraged to explore, imagine, create, collaborate, take appropriate risks and develop independence through a wide range of play experiences.

    Our approach includes opportunities for:

    • Creative and imaginative play
    • Physical activity and movement
    • Social interaction and teamwork
    • Problem-solving and challenge
    • Construction and loose parts play
    • Quiet and reflective spaces
    • Exploration of the natural environment

By enhancing our outdoor spaces and offering a wider variety of play experiences, we help children develop confidence, resilience, communication skills and wellbeing.

The OPAL programme recognises that every child plays differently. Our goal is to ensure that all children feel included, engaged and excited about spending time outdoors.

As our OPAL journey develops, families may notice changes to outdoor areas, new play opportunities and occasional requests for donations of suitable resources. We look forward to working together with our school community to make play an even more valuable and enjoyable part of every school day.

We are excited to continue building an environment where children can play, learn and flourish together.
